Navidad Boricua: Coquito

Another Puerto Rican Christmas tradition is Coquito! Some time around Thanksgiving, I begin to see people on social media post that they’re either making Coquito or looking for someone that makes it.  It makes a really nice (and tasty) gift- it’s like a party in a bottle!

What is Coquito? It’s a traditional Puerto Rican drink made with coconut milk, condensed milk, evaporated milk, cinnamon, cloves, and rum. It is thick, creamy, and sweet, and has a smooth coconut flavor with a hint of spice.  It’s most similar to egg nog, but with more spices and coconut. There are many versions out there- some people make it with shredded coconut in it, others make it without rum, some make flavored versions like Nutella or pistachio, and there are even vegan options out there!

Whatever way it’s made, Coquito is a beloved symbol of Puerto Rican culture and is associated with joy and celebration. It is often shared among family and friends during the holidays, symbolizing the warmth of the Puerto Rican culture and its strong sense of community.

Since we only offer Coquito for a limited time, and only for local delivery or pickup, we’re sharing a basic version of Coquito so that you can make it all year round!

Puerto Rican coquito

-2 cans (14oz) of coconut milk

-1 can (12oz) of evaporated milk

-1 can (14oz) of sweetened condensed milk

-1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

-1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

-1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg or cloves (optional)

-1/2 teaspoon of coconut extract (optional)

-1/2 to 1 cup of white rum (optional)

1. In a blender, combine all ingredients except for the rum. Blend until all ingredients are well combined.

2. Pour the mixture into a large pitcher and add 1/2-1 cup of white rum. Stir until it's fully incorporated.

3. Taste and adjust the flavors as desired, adding more cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves if desired.

4. Refrigerate the coquito for at least 4 hours before serving.

5. Serve the coquito chilled, garnished with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and/or a dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy!
